Americans trace their ancestors' origins, particularly in the
German speaking areas of Europe.
IGS Headquarters--During July 1989 the Society moved its
headquarters to Burbank where it conducts its business as a
California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation. All Society
activities are carried out by its member volunteers.
Donations to the IGS Donations of cash and books are
tax-deductible. Tax-deductible cash donations for the purchase
of Library materials and supplies are always welcomed.
Publications:
- IGS Newsletter: This very interesting, monthly (4 to 6
page) publication contains helpful (brief) items and many new
sources are listed. Jean Nepsund, the research director, is the

IGS Library--At its headquarters, the Society houses the
Immigrant Library. The IGS Library is an expansion of Elisabeth
Sharp and Gerda Haffner's personal collection of German and
American genealogical books. Many IGS members have donated books
to the collection.
About half of the IGS Library collection relates to American
genealogy. However it is best known for its sizeable collection
of German materials, not available elsewhere in the United
States. The IGS Library is open to the public three days each
week (see "IGS Library Hours" below). It is staffed by trained
members of the Society. Use of the Library is free to members.
A donation of US$2.00 per visit is requested from
non-members.
IGS Library Hours are as follows:
- Wed. 12 noon - 5 p.m.
- Sat. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Sun. 12 noon - 5 p.m.
- Closed Holidays

researchers in the greater Los Angeles area and throughout the
world by many means:

Genealogy Seaches for Overseas Germans: During 1993 IGS
began offering two searches to genealogists in Germany. The
response has been enthusiastic. Persons in Germany are enabled
to contact descendants of relatives who emigrated to America.
Branches of families are being reunited with one another in
Germany as well as with U.S. descendants. These searches will be
posted in Deutsch and linked to this IGS HomePage soon
