I am trying to find a tie to my ancestor, Wilhelm RADAU, who was born at Rosenburg, East Prussia in 1840. He married a Pauline SCHROETTER (SCHROEDER ?) and they had four sons, Adolphe, Otto Hugo, Franz and Paul. They also had a daughter named Pauline. The family story is that Wilhelm RADAU was a member of the Emperor's Palace Guard. The entire family moved to the United States in 1880 and settled in East Feliciana Parish of Louisiana. They were active Lutherans and probably practiced that religion in East Prussia. I do not know either the ship or the route they took in coming to the U.S.A.

His mothers name was Johanna (nee LANGE) and his father was Herman. Herman was also born at Koenigsberg. They were Baptists and there supposedly was a large Baptist church in Koenigsberg . Does anyone have any information or know how I could find those church records? Thank you

I am looking for information regarding my Father, Fritz Albert SCHARFENORT, who was born at Ponarth, Koenigsberg, East Prussia on 20 November 1898. His fathers name was August SCHARFENORT, Mother Wilhelmine BOEHM (BOHM), uncle Hermann BOEHM, twin sister Charlotte and sisters Elsie and Anna Carolina. He also had a cousin, Gustav SCHARFENORT (1897-1945). He was confirmed as a Lutheran in 1912 and I have a certificate of Graduation as a typographer from Fortbildungschule at Koenigsberg (Ponarth) in 1916. He immigrated to the US in 1920. I am curious of the name of SCHARFENORT and are there any records that were not destroyed during the war. I am also looking for Hlonc, East Prussia? Thank you.

I am seeking information on Gustav HALB and his family. They emigrated from Konigsberg, East Prussia in 1868 and settled first in Dakota Territory. I have no information on his father's given name. Gustav was born 5 June 1843 and his wife's name was Catherin Louise PIECK. She was born 9 March 1850. They settled at Swanwick, Illinois around 1890 and died there. I need help locating the records in Konigsberg.

My mother grew up as a child at the village of Steintal, East Prussia. Would anybody in this village remember the name GNIPP ?. My mothers maiden name was Anna GNIPP, born 22 March 1903. Her fathers name was Johann GNIPP. I think her mothers maiden name was KOZLOWSKI. Could you send me in the right direction, to find out about the family? I have family in Germany, but no one for one reason or another has any information about the family GNIPP-KOZLOWSKI. Thank you.

I am looking for information on my great grandmother. Her name was Augusta FOSTER and I know she lived at Koenigsburg, Germany, born somewhere in the late 1890s. I know she definitely still has relatives over there, because she had around 13 brothers and sisters, only one of whom I know for sure immigrated to America shortly after Augusta did. As far as I know, they were a Lutheran family. Augusta FOSTER immigrated to America, arriving at Ellis Island when she was 17, somewhere between 1912-1916. There she married a husband born in Great Britain who also immigrated to the USA. His last name was BROWN. They had three children, George, Chubb, and Doris (my grandmother). Augusta died in 1935 in her late 30s. Any information you may have on the town itself or any of these people would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

I am looking for information on my stepfather's family. My stepfather, Herbert Wilheim GRUNHEID, was born 6 February 1926 and came from a village called Kleinbaumgarten (near Koenigsberg), East Prussia. His mother's given name was Eva and his father was a blacksmith. He had one younger brother who I believe was in the German Navy. My stepfather was a POW and was stationed at a camp in Fife, Scotland. Many thanks.

Is anyone researching the ISZDONS family? My husband's mother's parents came from East Prussia, but we at the moment do not know where they came from. Her parents name was Martin ISZDONS. He married a Anna MAUER. His parents were Martin ISZDONS, who married a Anna YACENTO. The children of Martin and Anna MAUER were Fritz, August, Frieda, Martha, Ella, Herman and my husband's mother Meta (birth date born 27 June 1903 in Hamburg Germany). The others so far have been unable to obtain a date of birth. Two of the children were born in East Prussia the others in Hamburg Germany, where they had come to live. Have no dates when they arrived in Germany. Fritz and August were born in East Prussia.

My grandfather, Friedrich Wilhelm GORBA (GORBAE / GORBA) was of the Lutheran Protestant faith and was born at Burdungen, Germany (now Burdag, Poland) on 16 June 1870. He immigrated to America from the port of Antwerp, Belgium on 12 October 1894 and landed at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 24 October 1894 at the age of 24 after having completed his tour of military service to William the second, the German Emperor. His last foreign address is listed on naturalization papers as Buer Nesfalar ( Germany ?). At the time of his application for US citizenship he was living at Ehrenfeld, Pennsylvania; the date was 7 February 1917. My grandmother was Wilhelmine Henriette HOLLMANN, also of the Lutheran Protestant faith, who immigrated to America in 1803 to a Virginia port - I have no documents on her immigration. She, her mother (same name but reversed) Henriette Wilhemine HOLLMANN and her sister, Bertha HOLLMANN, immigrated together. Bertha HOLLMANN married Elfred NELSON (in Sweden) before the passage. My grandparents were married in 1895. The following children were born to them: Alfred GORBA, 20 May 1897; Frederick William GORBA, 4 July 1899; Emma GORBA, 16 November 1900; Anna GORBA, 20 May 1903; Henrietta GORBA, 21 June 1905; Ella GORBA, 3 February 1908; Henry GORBA, 14 September 1910; William GORBA, 4 November 1912; Hilma GORBA, 26 December 1917, and a son, ERNEST, who died in infancy. I would appreciate any information on my grandparents, who their parents were, anything anyone would be willing to share; as I was 5 when my grandfather died in 1942 and 6 when my grandmother died in 1943. They are buried in Prospect cemetery at Portage, Pennsylvania. They talked about Dusseldorf (shopped there) and Gelsenkirchen.

Please forgive my spelling. My father was the third child born, known as "Fritz" and he and his siblings spoke and wrote German. My grandfather spoke German & Polish and said he was born near the Polish border. I've found Burdungen on a map. I would appreciate any information about my family in Germany. Bochum is most probably where they were from as well as Neidenburg. I do not know my ggrandmothers' maiden name but I've been told she was married twice, her first husbands' name was SPITZ. I found the name of my grandfathers' birthplace on documents at the Ebensburg, Pennsylvania courthouse on his application for U.S. citizenship and sent copies to every branch of his descendants I had an address to reach.

I am searching for connections to two of my ancestors that emigrated from Koenigsberg, East Prussia in the spring of 1848. Friedrich Wilhelm POTKORA, was born in 1817 at Koenigsberg, East Prussia. In East Prussia, he may have been a preacher or gardener for the king (according to one family story). At Albany, New York, he worked as a gardener. He was married to, and emigrated with, Friedarika SASSE, daughter of Johann and Katharina SASSE. They had five daughters: Augusta Karolina Ernestine, Maria Elisabeth, Maria Elisabeth, Martha Louise (my great grandmother), and Henriette.

I need information on Waldemar SABOROWSKY and his wife, Anna SCHAEFER. They had a daughter, Herta Clara Elizabet SABOROWSKY, born 5 May 1900 at Bialla Kreis SchlagerKrueg. She married Hans Herman WELBAT, born 7 November 1899 and had son, Horst Heinz WELBAT, born 22 September 1920 at Koenigsberg (my late father) All are from East Prussia and all were Lutherans. I am searching for information on my maternal grandparents, Max Ralph MENDEL (born 13 May 1877) and Minnie / Minka / Mina MENDEL (born 10 December 1881). Thaey were first cousins. Max's father was Samuel MENDEL and Minnie's father was Samuel's twin brother Israel MENDEL. Max was known to have lived at Tilsit and Koeningsberg and Minnie was known to have lived in Tilsit. Max had 4 brothers who immigrated to the United States. They were Abraham, Joseph / Josef, Nathan and Isadore. He also had at least 5 sisters, but none were known to have immigrated. Their names or nicknames were Ada, Sara, Kerbchen, Munke, Hussi. Max's father was married at least 3 times and Joseph was Max's only full brother. Minnie had 2 brothers who immigrated, Louis, a photographer and Oscar. She had at least 4 sisters. Their names were Eva (she married Baruch / Barnard LASTAR), Gertrude, Helen (she married Jacob/Jack LASTAR), and Rachel (she married Julius ALBAN). Only Eva and Helen are known to have immigrated to Canada and the United States. On the Toronto, Ontario, Canada marriage certificate dated 25 December 1904 for Minnie and Max, it states that Max was a cigarmaker at Koenigsberg. This would have been sometime between 1902 and 1904. He had become a United States citizen in 1898, but returned to Germany / Prussia about 1902. Sometime between late August and December of 1904, Max brought Minnie to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada where she stayed with her sister Eva until the wedding in Toronto. Any information on the birthplace, wives names, fate of the females who did not immigrate would be greatly appreciated.

KATZENMEIER, Wendy

(Evangelisch)

I am trying to find information about my father's family and have very little information with which to begin. My father, Herbert Willie ALBRECHT was born 1925 at Kragau, Kreis Samland, East Prussia to Ernst Walter ALBRECHT and Therese Rosine LUTTER. They were married at Medenau, Kreis Samland, East Prussia, i,,igrated to America and moved to Evanston, Cook county, Illinois, USA in 1928. Ernst died there in 1954. Therese died at St. Charles, Illinois in 1987. Herbert died at Lake Forest, Illinois in 1989. Both of their families were supposed to be Evangelische. They attended Bethlehem Evangelisch Lutheran Church in Evanston, Illinois when they arrived in the USA.

Ernst Walter ALBRECHT was born 1901 at Craam, Kreis Samland, East Prussia to August ALBRECHT (b. ? - d. before 1925, E. Prussia) and Auguste GUS (b. ? - d. after 1928, East Prussia). Ernst had several siblings. I don't know for sure if these are the correct names; Marie, Grete, Lina, Bertha, Franz, and Otto. Therese Rosine LUTTER was born 1906 in Wischehnen, Kreis Samland, E. Prussia to Fritz Friedrich LUTTER (b. 1875, E. Prussia - d. 1941, presumably in Russia) and Rosine Ernestine GLAUS (born 1875, East Prussia - died 1931, Kragau, Kreis Samland, East Prussia). Therese had 3 known siblings, Martha Ernestine (married Edward HAUFF), Gertrud Elisabet (married Franz Gustav PAULIEN) and Fritz or Fritz Friedrich (first spouse unknown, second spouse Bertha ?). There may have been another Therese born before 1906 who died as an infant or young child.

I am looking for ANY information pertaining to the birth mother and father of my father, Erich Maximilian SELZER. My grandmother, Marta KILOTAT, was born at Tilsit, East Prussia (now Sovetsk) sometime between 1900 and 1908. She was raised a Lutheran, Protestant. At some point prior to 1925, she gave birth to an illegimate child (my father, Erich). The name of the birth father was never divulged. At some point after 1925, Marta KILOTAT moved to Berlin, where she met and married a Jewish engineer from Poland, Leon SELZER. Leon adopted my father. The family then immigrated in 1938 to Bogota, Columbia and later, in the mid-1950s to Astoria, New York and New York City. Marta KILOTAT (who died in 1973) had several sisters, one of whom Elena KILOTAT, was living until the late 1970s at Hamburg, Germany. If anyone out there has info. about the KILOTAT family from Tilsit, please contact me. Many thanks

Friedrich SCHMIDT, born 4 August 1831 at Aszlanken, Mehlkehmen; August Johann SCHMIDT, born 22 February 1834 at the same place. Carl SCHMIDT, born 12 March 1837; Matthes SCHMIDT, born 9 March 1840; Wilhelm SCHMIDT, born 28 January 1843; Christian SCHMIDT, born 11 December 1846. August Johann SCHMIDT married Christine BREDOW (born 17 December 1839)

I have some records of a Christian SCHMIDT married to a Anna Dorotea MANN on 04 November 1828 at Mehlkemen, Staliupoenen, East Prussia. They had six boys: Friedrich, August Johann, Carl, Matthes, Wilhem and Christian. I know August and Christian immigrated to Texas in 1883 thru 1884. I think Wilhem and Carl immigrated to Texas also. I think Frierich stayed (in East Prussia) . I am trying to see if we still have relatives there. I can go back to a Christian SCHMIDT. He married a Elisabeth NAUJAKAT in 1791. I guess this is the name on of the district they lived was Mehlkehmen. Because next is a list of villages they lived: Gruenwalde, Staliupoenen and Aszlanken. Thanks for any help. I am looking for the Mantheiy, Mantheiy, Hedtke, Herzog in province of Posen also.

McDONNELL, Cora L.
eMail address: coralmcdonnell@hotmail.com

I have been searching for the birth place in Prussia of my grandfather, Otto Frederick RICHTER (born 1864, died 1908 at Memphis, Tennessee, USA). On his death certificate, the name of his father is given as "Gus." I know no other given names of his family, although he did have at least a brother who was a Hussar, and two sisters (from photographs). Otto named his only son "Adolph." My cousin tells me that our grandfather came from a small village in East Prussia called "Rauchew" and that the family was considered "Junker."

The IGI file lists a birth date for Gustav Adolph RICHTER, born 1836 in Gudwallen, East Prussia. When I go to http://www.kartenmeister.com">http://www.kartenmeister.com I find that there is a town Rochau only a few miles from Gudwallen. From the latitude / longitude coordinates, both of these towns are east of Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg) in that small area of the Baltic shore that now is part of Russia - between Poland and Lithuania. I would like to check church records of these two presumably small towns. In the LDS Research Guide for Germany I see that small towns are often included in the parish of a nearby larger town. How can I find the parish(s) to which Gudwallen and Rochau belong? Since this small area is now part of Russia, will "Germans from Russia " be the appropriate site to search? Can you give me any references to learn about the history of this area? I will appreciate your advice. Thanks.

OTT, Emlyn, Reverand (Lutheran)
eMail address: Emlynott@aol.com

(Lutheran)

My grandmother, Emma Bertha MARTENS (married name OTT) was raised at Muhlhausen, East Prussia. I am interested to know the current name of the city, which I believe is now in Poland and what would be the best means of researching her family--many of whom emigrated around the same time she did (post World War I) but there were several brothers and sisters that did not. Her birth date was October 1896. Siblings (that I know of) included Johannes, Walter, Henry, Minnie--but I believe there were 12 in total.

She was Lutheran (and in the tradition, I am a Lutheran Pastor) so I wonder about the feasibility of church research over there. I will be on sabbatical in Europe from January to May, 2003. Many thanks.
Note from John Movius: To the best of my knowledge, virtually no ethnic Germans remained in Poland after World War II. Most left for Germany before the end of World War II and now live in Germany or elewhere in the free world. Looking in Mulhausen, Poland is only useful if you seek to see what it looks like now. Your best opportunities are for research are in Germany, starting at the Zentralstelle für Genealogie at Leipzig. Your wisest move is to start research in America first, using the resources of the Family History Library (FHL) at Salt Lake City, Utah.

PAYNE, Marie
eMail address: payne1@bigpond.com

I am researching FISCHER, Hermann, bc1833 at Koenigsberg, believed son of FISCHER, Adolph and Caroline. Hermann arrived in Australia, most probably South Australia circa 1852 / 1853 before settling Adelong, N.S.W. and then Sydney. It is believed that he was possibly a crew member on the ship and deserted in Australia. His father was believed to be a German Army Officer of some rank and there is a photo in uniform. Nothing found in archives for Koenigsberg old town church records, only one entry "Adolph Fischer, Koneigsberg". Nothing in I.G.I. I wrote to Secret State archives with no record in miliary books or Evangelical church records. I was told Prussian records were destroyed by bombing of Potsdam. The Berlin archives check yielded no record. So far no trace can be found. I would appreciate any information or advice as to where to approach next.

PLIKUHN, Robert
eMail address: plikuhnbc"@jps.net

(Lutheran)

I am searching for the birth place of my grandfather, August PLIKUHN, born 10 June 1859 possibly in East Prussia. In 1887 he was medically released from the German army at Konigsberg, East Prussia. In October 1891 a document from Pillkall shows he applied to have his visa extended from the original March, 1886 date so he could continue to work in Russia as a zeigler. Listed in the application with him are his wife Anna (REINHARDT), 30 and his sister Marie, 30. All were from Borszeningken. On 5 August 1892 August, Anna and their five children Anna, Minna, Emma, Oscar, and Emil (Aduart) immigrated from Hamburg aboard the ship "Columbia" to Chicago via New York. The ship records them as being from Borszeningken. I would like to learn the location of Borszeningken and the names of any Lutheran churches in the area. Also, could Pillkall be Pillkallen? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

RAMSAY-SCOTT, Jean
eMail address: ramscott@home.com

I am interested in the genealogy of people who came from Koenigsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). The name is Klaus Kunibert HILL (seems like it must be a change from some other name). He was born in 1934 and lived at Koenigsberg until 1945, when they moved to West Germany near Hannover. Any help in researching this family would be appreciated. I think I want to know about how to know if these people were ethnic German, Russian or Pole or whatever. What records, if any, are available, etc. Thanks in advance.

SAYER, Charlotte
eMail address: Tony@konungr.demon.co.uk

(Baptist)

I've just visited your web site and wondered if I could add something to the list. My father lived at Metgethen, just west of Konigsberg, before World War II. His name was Johannes PIEPEREIT. His father, Emil PIEPEREIT, ran a brick works and they ran a Baptist chapel from their home. His mother, Minna PIEPEREIT, nee GEZORK, died young, in the 1920s or 30s. His sister was Frieda PIEPEREIT and she married Fritz BOSS - they both escaped to West Germany in 1941. My father was a radio officer in the army and ended up being sent to the Russian front which was then Metgethen. He was picked up by a red cross ship in 1945. He was then a prisoner of war and was taken to England.

Does anyone have any memories of these people or places? Are there any cemeteries still left where my Grandmother might be buried? What is the best way to actually visit there? As I don't speak the local languages, are there any tours with guides from anywhere - UK, Germany? Does anyone have photographs of Metgethen that I might buy copies of? Are there any books that I could look out for? Any help at all would be much appreciated.
John Cakars Note: The questions posed in the last paragraph do have answers. It is a matter of joining the relevant mailing lists and posting to other Prussian/German Message Boards. For books, check out Amazon.de. You can also use http://www.Google.de/ to input any of the places or people mentioned. You can set Google.de to search only German websites. You can use http://maxpage.com/poland to check resources and get in touch with people knowledgeable about the Polish Archives. Then of course there is the matter of using the sources of your local Family History Centre, http://familysearch.org/.

I am trying to find information on my 11th great-grandfather, Balthesser / Balthasser / Balthaser BECKER. He was born 20 March 1604 and died 20 June 1698. He was given the family name and the coat of Arms in 1632 by the Prussian Ruler whose court he represented at Royal Court Amsterdam, Holland.
